Introduction to Anonymization and Pseudonymization of Research Data In-Person
Join us for a workshop examining the management of research data with a specific focus on anonymization and pseudonymization.
When working with human subjects or sensitive data, protecting participant privacy is essential — but the steps needed to achieve that protection can often feel complex or unclear.
This workshop will introduce the key principles of data anonymization and pseudonymization, explain how they fit into broader research data management and data protection strategies, and walk through practical examples of how to apply these techniques in real research contexts.
What you’ll learn:
-
Anonymization and pseudonymization in the context of data protection and ethics in research
-
How to plan a data de-identification strategy from the outset of a project
-
How to balance preserving the utility of data with privacy commitments
Live demonstrations will include:
-
Common techniques for removing or masking identifiers
-
Perturbation (adding noise to data while preserving patterns)
-
Redaction and generalization
-
Re-identification risks and how to evaluate them
The session will be led by members of the research data office. There will be time for questions and discussion if you want to address privacy questions in your research project.
Who should attend:
This workshop is for researchers from any discipline who work with personal, sensitive, or confidential data.
By the end of the session, you’ll:
-
Understand the difference between anonymization and pseudonymization and be able to judge when each option might be appropriate
-
Be familiar with a range of de-identification techniques and their strengths/limitations
-
Know how to start planning a privacy strategy aligned with ethical and legal requirements
-
Have seen real examples of how to apply anonymization methods in practice
